Xiidra® (Lifitegrast Ophthalmic Solution) 5%
Xiidra® is a prescription eye drop specifically designed to treat the signs and symptoms of dry eye disease (DED). Dry eye disease occurs when inflammation interferes with the normal production of tears, causing discomfort and vision issues. Xiidra works by targeting inflammation at the root of the problem, helping to alleviate both the symptoms you can feel and the signs your doctor can detect.
How Xiidra Works
Xiidra is unique in that it is the only nonsteroidal, anti-inflammatory eye drop that targets a specific protein interaction known to cause inflammation in dry eye disease. By blocking the LFA-1 protein from interacting with ICAM-1, Xiidra helps to reduce the inflammation that is common in dry eye disease.

How to Use Xiidra
To use Xiidra effectively, apply one drop in each eye twice daily, roughly 12 hours apart. Make sure to remove contact lenses before applying Xiidra and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them. Xiidra comes in single-use vials, and the remaining solution should be discarded immediately after use.

Alternatives to Xiidra®
While Xiidra® is an excellent treatment for dry eye disease, it may not be suitable for every patient. Your doctor may suggest one of the following alternatives:
Cequa®: Like Xiidra, Cequa is a prescription eye drop that targets inflammation to treat chronic dry eye. Cequa contains cyclosporine and may work faster for some patients, with noticeable improvement in as little as 2 weeks. Learn more about Cequa here.
Restasis®: Another cyclosporine-based medication, Restasis works over a longer period (3-6 months) to increase natural tear production. It may be a better option for patients who prefer cyclosporine but don't need rapid relief. Learn more about Restasis here.
Artificial Tears: For milder cases of dry eye, over-the-counter artificial tears can provide temporary relief by supplementing your body’s natural tear production. However, they don’t address the underlying inflammation like Xiidra does.
Discuss your symptoms with your doctor to determine which treatment is best for you. Visit our Dry Eye Syndrome page for more alternatives and information on dry eye treatments.
