Miebo® (Perfluorohexyloctane Ophthalmic Solution)
Miebo® is a prescription eye drop specially formulated to treat the signs and symptoms of dry eye disease (DED) by targeting tear evaporation. Unlike other treatments, Miebo directly addresses the root cause of dry eye for many patients: excessive tear evaporation. This unique formula works by forming a protective layer on the surface of the eye, helping you retain more of your natural tears.
How Miebo Works
Miebo is the first and only prescription eye drop designed to reduce tear evaporation. When you apply a drop of Miebo, it spreads evenly across the surface of the eye, creating a protective barrier that mimics the outer layer of your tear film. This barrier helps reduce friction when you blink and can heal the surface of the eye over time with continued use.
Reduces Tear Evaporation: Miebo works by forming a lasting protective layer on your eye, preventing your tears from evaporating too quickly.
Preservative-Free: The formula is preservative-free, which means it’s gentle on the eyes and can be safely used over a long period of time.
Conditions Treated with Miebo
Miebo is indicated for the treatment of dry eye disease, particularly in patients whose symptoms are caused or worsened by excessive tear evaporation.
Visit our Dry Eye Syndrome page for more details on symptoms and additional treatment options.
How to Use Miebo
To get the most benefit from Miebo, it’s important to follow your doctor’s instructions carefully. Typically, Miebo is applied as one drop four times daily in each affected eye. Be sure to remove contact lenses before applying the drops and wait at least 30 minutes before reinserting them. The sterile, multi-dose bottle is designed for ease of use, but any unused solution should be discarded after the bottle’s expiration date.

Alternatives to Miebo®
While Miebo® is an innovative treatment for dry eye disease caused by tear evaporation, other options may be suitable depending on the underlying cause of your dry eye. Here are some alternatives your doctor may consider:
Cequa®: A cyclosporine-based eye drop that targets inflammation to treat chronic dry eye. Cequa helps increase tear production by addressing the inflammatory causes of dry eye. Learn more about Cequa here.
Restasis®: Another cyclosporine-based prescription eye drop, Restasis is designed to increase tear production over time by reducing eye inflammation. It’s often used for patients with more severe forms of chronic dry eye. Learn more about Restasis here.
Xiidra®: Xiidra works by blocking a specific protein interaction that causes inflammation in the eyes, providing relief from dry eye symptoms within a few weeks. Learn more about Xiidra here.
